How to Grill Out for a Great 4th of July

It's Time to Plan!

The 4th of July is just around the corner, which means it's time to fire up the grill and celebrate Independence Day with a backyard barbecue. Whether you're hosting a backyard cookout or attending a gathering with friends and family, this grilling guide will help you plan and prepare for a memorable July 4th celebration. From prepping your grill to exploring delicious recipes, we've got you covered.

If you've ever hosted a gathering before, you know a lot of the work is done in the pre-planning. If you haven't gotten around to planning yet, don't worry! We've got you covered.

Be sure to plan your menu ahead of time with plenty of time to gather ingredients or divide the responsibilities up between guests. Making sure each guests knows what to bring will help avoid having too many bags of chips and no napkins or utensils. Gathering all ingredients before the day of the event will help you avoid any last-minute trips to the grocery store and help make your day stress free.

After your menu is planned, make sure you also plan the cooking schedule. Ensuring you have enough time to let meat thaw and cook is very important. You don't want to start a brisket that needs 6-8 hours to cook after your guests have already arrived. Planning your cooking schedule will help avoid cold food or hungry guests and make sure your 4th of July goes smoothly.

Be sure to set the tone for your gathering! Decorations like festive plates and banners will get everyone in a festive mood. Make a playlist before the gathering to top things off. Summertime games and sparkles are great additions to having a great Independence Day celebration.

Prep Your Grill for Holiday Grilling

Along with planning, you'll need to make sure your grill is in fighting condition for your gathering.

If you purchased a new grill for your cookout, make sure you put it together at least two days before your cookout. This will give you enough time to season it and avoid stress.

If this is the first time, you're breaking out the grill for summer or you've already used it quite a bit, it is probably in need of a good deep cleaning.

Use a grill brush to scrape off all excess carbon and soot on the underside of the lid. Brush the grates to remove any food and debris from the grates.

After your grill is completely clean, you will need to re-season it. To do so, coat the entire inside of the grill and both sides of the grill grates with an oil like vegetable or canola oil. Next, start a small pile of coals in the main chamber of the grill. Let the coals fully ignite, open the dampers on the grill hallway, and let the coals fully burn down. After that, your grill will be ready to take on your 4th of July cookout!

Make sure you also check your charcoal or gas supply. If you're using a griddle or gas grill, inspect the propane tank for leaks and ensure it's adequately filled. If you're using a charcoal grill, stock up on charcoal and/or wood for a flavorful grilling experience.
