In honor of all things salty and sweet, these bacon-wrapped apple slices smash your taste buds from start to finish. Start with salty bacon, slightly tart apples, cinnamon, sugar, and a sweet, buttery bourbon finish make these a great appetizer or dessert.

Instructions

  1. 01

Prepare Char-Griller AKORN for indirect heat at 350° Optional: Add applewood for a kiss of smoke flavor

  2. 02

Slice off both ends of each apple. Using a smaller, flexible knife or apple corer remove cores and seeds

  3. 03

Slice de-cored apples horizontally to make O-shapes. Be sure to cut each slice's width as evenly as possible

  4. 04

Cut bacon slices into half. Use a half slice of bacon for each apple-O. Start by weaving one end of the bacon through the top of the hole and under the bottom, bringing it back over the top of the apple. Then bring the other end over to hold it in place, continuing to weave bacon around the remaining parts of the apple using the same method Tip: Thin sliced bacon works better with this recipe because it is easier to maneuver and stretch around the apple

  5. 05

In a bowl, combine cinnamon and sugar. Sprinkle generously onto each side of the apple

  6. 06

Place apples on a pizza stone, wire rack, or baking pan. Put inside the Akorn and bake for 25 min at 350° or until apples are soft but still have bite and bacon has browned and caramelized

  7. 07

Making glaze: While apples bake, melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Once melted, slowly sift and stir in powdered sugar. Simmer until combined and add bourbon. Simmer a bit longer until alcohol taste has cooked out

  8. 08

Let cool for 1-2 min then drizzle over apples. Top with more cinnamon and sugar if desired. Enjoy!
