How to Shut Down & Clean the Gravity 980 Charcoal Grill

The key to a long life for any grill and constant next-level cooks is to ensure you keep your grill clean and maintained. In this blog, we’re showing you not only how to properly shut down your Gravity 980, but also how to keep it clean and in fighting shape!

First and foremost, always use a Grilling Gloves when tending to the hopper, fire shutter or latches when you are shutting down your Gravity 980 after a cook. The hopper and latches will be hot and the gloves will keep you protected.

Once you are finished with a cook, turn off the controller by pressing and holding the Power Button for 2 seconds. Unplug the grill from the Power Source. Close the rear adjustable smoke damper and fan door, then insert the fire shutter.

Ensure the main grill lid, the charcoal hopper lid and ash pan door are all securely closed and latched. After about 15 minutes, you should scrape down the grates of your Gravity 980.

We recommend cleaning your grates and emptying the grease pan after every cook. Use a grate scraper to clean your grates before applying a light coat of flaxseed or another vegetable oil.

To ensure an easier cooking and cleaning process, ensure your Gravity is cool, then open the bottom hopper door and empty the ash pan after every single cook. Firmly tap the charcoal grate to loosen any stubborn ash and always dump the ashes into a metal container and cover them with water to ensure there are no lit coals lingering.

Allow your grill to cool completely down before covering it with your custom fit Char-Griller Gravity 980 Charcoal Grill Cover.
